Asbestos Surveys
Accurate and reliable building inspections are carried out by highly experienced EPA and state certified consultants. Each consultant has a comprehensive knowledge of asbestos issues ranging from analytical methods, to asbestos containing materials and uses in buildings. Their understanding of materials facilitates inspections of dust, insulation materials, vinyl floor tiles, acoustical products, and other potential hazardous materials. Results can be presented in customized building inspection reports with AutoCADŽ drawings, which provide a solid foundation for making management or abatement decisions.
Asbestos Abatement Consulting Services
Comprehensive asbestos abatement consulting services are offered including specification development, inspection and documentation of work practices, air monitoring and clearance sampling. Emphasis is placed on personnel protection, secure containment, and safe abatement practices.
Why is Asbestos a Hazard?
Asbestos is made up of microscopic bundles of fibers. Usually
asbestos is mixed with other materials to actually form the products.
Floor tiles, for example, may contain only a small percentage of
asbestos. The asbestos content of different materials varies according
to the product and how it is used. Among those materials with higher
concentrations of asbestos are insulation products on heating systems
and the backing on sheet vinyl flooring.
An uncontrolled disturbance of any asbestos-containing material in any
concentration may be dangerous to your health. When asbestos becomes
airborne, the fibers can be inhaled into the lungs, where they may cause
significant health problems. The longer the exposure, the greater the
risk of contracting an asbestos related disease.
Asbestosis - As asbestos fibers are inhaled, they may become
trapped in the lung tissue. The body tries to dissolve the fibers by
producing an acid. This acid, due to the chemical resistance of the
fiber, does little to damage the fiber, but may scar the surrounding
tissue. Eventually, this scarring may become so severe that the lungs
cannot function. The latency period is often 25-40 years.
Mesothelioma - a cancer of the pleura ( the outer lining of the
lung and chest cavity) and/ or the peritoneum ( the lining of the
abdominal wall). The only known cause is from asbestos exposure. The
latency period for mesothelioma is often 15-30 years.
Lung Cancer - caused by asbestos. The effects of lung cancer are
often greatly increased by cigarette smoking ( by about 50%). Cancer of
the gastrointestinal tract can also be caused by asbestos. The latency
period for cancer is often 15-30 years.
